WATERVILLE – State police say two people from Sanford were killed in a fiery accident in Waterville Wednesday morning.
A state police spokesperson said it happened at 10:25 a.m. on Interstate 95 near mile marker 127.
Troopers said 71-year-old Gary Capehart and 63-year-old Susan Pope, both of Sanford, were traveling north when their vehicle left the roadway.
According to police, the car went over a guard rail, landed on its roof on Kennedy Memorial Drive, then went over another guard rail before becoming engulfed in fire.
The two were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say speed, weather conditions and traffic congestion due to another crash were factors.
Kennedy Memorial Drive was closed for two hours while authorities investigated. Police and firefighters from Waterville and Oakland, as well as the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, Delta Ambulance, and Ace Towing helped state police troopers at the scene.
Authorities want to remind people to travel safely during the holidays by going slow in bad weather and paying attention to advisory warning signs along the road.
