AUGUSTA – Maine lawmakers today will be considering a statewide contract for teachers.
A legislative committee is considering a pair of bills aimed at creating a more uniform system around the state.
The average pay for Maine teachers is about $50,000 a year, which is about $20,000 than the rest of New England.
The hope is by having a statewide contract, not only will their pay increase, but it will also help rural school districts attract better educators because they wont have to compete as much with the urban districts. It will also help attract more teachers to Maine.
However, the Maine Education Association is skeptical a new contract will end up increasing pay.
A work session on the bills is being held this afternoon and we’ll have a full report Tuesday at 6 p.m.
