WINDHAM – A woman convicted of manslaughter in the death of a 5-year-old-girl is now free.
The Department of Corrections released Sally Ann Schofield from the Maine Correctional Center in Windham yesterday.
Schofield was a DHHS case worker who was convicted of killing a child in her care back in 2002.
Logan Marr, 5, was wrapped in yards of duct tape and died tipped over in a high chair in Schofield’s basement.
The case resulted in an overhaul of the state’s child welfare system, putting an emphasis on keeping children with relatives rather than in foster care.
Yesterday, Schofield was released from prison after serving 14 years of her 17-year sentence.
Marr’s mother, Christy Darling, said last month that Schofield’s release leaves little justice for her daughter. She stated “She took a child’s life and did what she wanted to do. Cause she had to be in the right. When does Logan get to have that right? When does her voice get heard?”
Darling is battling stage four lung cancer and could not be reached for further comment yesterday.
