MOUNT DESERT ISLAND - A group is working to make Mount Desert Island completely energy independent by 2030.

An MDI group called "Climate to Thrive" is launching a new initiative with revision energy to bring solar power to MDI.

For the next three months residents and businesses can now buy into a group purchasing and installation program called "Solarize MDI."

Revision Energy Customer Relations Manager, Jennifer Albee stated "The more people who install solar, the less the cost for everyone."

The solar panels are designed and by Revision Energy in Liberty. According to Joe Blotnick, the effort to make MDI energy independent is a goal that transcends this generation. He said 'Primarily it's for the future. Our children deserve an Earth that is still here in good shape."

For homeowners who do not have sunny spaces on their property, they can also invest in a community solar farm space.

Some say that investing in new solar initiatives will help keep jobs in Maine for young people.

According to "Climate to Thrive," MDI currently spends $60 million on energy costs every year.
