AUGUSTA – Governor LePage is asking President Trump to reverse the decision that created the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
He sent a letter to the president saying the monument should be turned over to private ownership “before economic damage occurs and traditional recreational pursuits are diminished.”
President Obama created the monument with the help of a donation of more than 87,000 acres from philanthropist Roxanne Quimby.
LePage has been an opponent from the beginning.
If President Trump does grant the governor’s request the Quimby family said it will drop its offer to provide a $40 million endowment fund to help manage the monument.
