BANGOR – For 40 years “The Literacy Volunteers of Bangor” have dedicated their lives to helping adults with low literacy.
There are more than 36 million adults that lack basic levels of literacy, whether it’s math, writing or reading.
This organization matches those in need with tutors for free, helping them to be successful in the workforce. But they need help from the community, they are in need of volunteers who have a love for helping people.
One such tutor Jon Ferreira stated, “Seeing a student make progress is one of the best things in the world. It’s amazing to see somebody, where they come in. The skills that they had and to see them develop the reading and writing. You’re sort of like a cheerleader for them, it’s easy to get very excited about that type of thing.”
Those interested in volunteering can visit the spring tutor training which starts on March 13th at 6 p.m. at Eastern Maine Community College.
