BAR HARBOR – Scientists at MDI Bio Lab are looking for ways to improve your life, and also to make it longer.
They said they’re on the cusp of scientific breakthrough.
What do round worms and humans have in common? Apparently more then you think.
Scientist are looking at the lifespan of these microscopic creatures to see if they can increase the longevity of their lives through protein synthesis, and according to Dr. Aric Rogers, this process is working.
Dr. Rogers said “We actually get a 40 to 50% longer lifespan by changing these genes.”
And if the roundworms are living longer, and were comprised of 40% of the same cells, then human beings are in luck.
“We’re not interested in making the round worm healthier, were using what we learn here to put it into a therapeutically study.” Added Dr. Rogers.
And after these clinical studies, you may be worried about how much this life changing medicine could cost, you should know that pharmaceutical companies are more nervous about it then you are
Rogers says a few of these discoveries are already making their ways into our everyday medicine such as aspirin.
