PALMYRA– A deadly fire killed two people and sent six residents jumping out of windows to escape the flames, bringing ten departments to the scene.
“It was quick and fast. I’m lucky. Someone was watching over me, I’m lucky. Lucky to be here, lucky my kids are okay. That’s all that matters.” said Joshua Lombard, a resident of the Palmyra apartment complex that went up in flames.
There are nine empty mailboxes, and nine displaced families as a home turned to rubble Tuesday morning. Jordan Ballard was also a resident at the apartment complex, and says he had to jump out of a two story building to get out of his burning home.
“I opened the door and its just smoke and flames, and I just went to the window.” said Ballard. Luckily his friend Joshua Lombard was there to catch him.
“I’m like, I wasn’t losing my best friend today. Not happening. Got my family out, next thing I have to worry about is my boys. My crew” said Lombard.
After rescuing his kids and girlfriend from the fire, Lombard went to retrieve more residents still stuck inside the home before fire crews could arrive, catching his neighbor and his girlfriend as they jumped off the second story “farmers porch”. Unfortunately, he couldn’t save them all. A man and a women living in the apartment were confirmed dead at the scene
“While we were on our way up we were told there were two people unaccounted for, unfortunately since the day progressed we have found two victims in the building” said SGT. Ken Grimes of the State Fire Marshal’s office.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined. As for the Lombard and Ballard, they’re just trying to pick up the pieces. “Hold your kids tonight. You never know whats going to happen. You never know what can happen.” said Lombard.
