AUGUSTA – The LePage administration once again is seeking permission from the federal government to ban junk food purchases using food stamp cards.
The Obama administration denied the request in the past. But with a new president in the White House, Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said the current administration may be receptive to placing more restrictions on the use of the E.B.T. Cards.
Specifically, they’re asking to prohibit the purchases of soda and candy.
Commissioner Mayhew stated “The food stamp program, which is called the supplemental nutrition assistance program, that allowing food stamps in this program to continue purchasing soda and candy is contrary to the nutritional focus of the program.”
Mayhew said, currently, data shows far more soda being purchased in Maine with the food stamp card than milk.
