AUGUSTA – State law says a life jacket has to be in a canoe or kayak when you’re on the water.
But if a bill working it’s way through the legislature passes you’ll have to actually wear the life jacket in order to be a legal boater.
Representative Joyce Maker, R-Calais said “I personally went in a kayak. And I did have a life jacket on. And, thank God I did because I tipped it. I was in the ocean down in Castine. So, if I hadn’t i probably wouldn’t, so I think it should be required.”
Maker sponsored the bill following a request from a voter whose son died in a canoeing accident. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
The bill is working it’s way through the Natural Resources Committee before it can go to the floor of the legislature.
