AUGUSTA – Another effort to arm Maine Forest Rangers is on the move in the legislature.
Right now, forest rangers are the only state law enforcement agency not able to carry weapons. But if this bill gets the okay, they’ll be able to carry a weapon as long as they provide it themselves.
Representative William Yuell, R-East Machias said “I’ve got an amendment I’m going to bring forward to say that they have to have training and be compliant with state police regulations, as far as carrying a handgun goes.”
This issue has been debated by legislators for decades. Now it’s back in the spotlight as the conservation committee held the first public hearing on the issue Tuesday.
Future hearings have not been scheduled.
