Maine asks to ban unhealthy food stamp sales Featured

Written by

STATEWIDE - Gov. LePage has commented in the past that he wants to ban food stamps from being used to purchase junk food. Now, the state is heading to the Trump Administration for permission.

We are told there has been communication between the Department of Health and Human Services and the Trump administration on the issue.

Those in support of the ban say this will help instill healthy habits.

"We know obesity is an epidemic that we are facing here in Maine and across our nation. And tax payer dollars, we need to, again, insure they are spent in the most efficient and effective ways possible because we don't have enough money to go around for everybody," says Gov. LePage's press secretary Adrienne Bennett.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows soft drinks are the most common food item purchased using food stamps.
