BIDDEFORD – One mans trash is another man’s treasure.
An artist in residence at the University of New England has taken trash collected from Maine beaches and turned it into a work of art.
Kim Bernard asked local students to keep the trash they picked up at beaches and of the 71 cans, 18 lobster trap pieces, 8 shoes, 7 glass bottles, among several other items, she was able to create this statue.
The idea is to show just how littered our oceans are and how important it is to keep our water clean.
The sculpture is now on permanent display at the Girard Marine Science Center at the University of New England in Biddeford.
