AUGUSTA – Another one of the citizen initiative questions voters approved in November is being questioned by legislators.
Even though ranked choice voting got the okay from voters, there are questions whether it violated Maine’s constitution. Now, the state senate president says they will ask the state supreme court to issue a ruling.
Senate President Mike Thibodeau, R-Winterport said “We’re trying to make sure that we don’t throw our election system into turmoil. So I think the responsible thing to do is to go to the courts, ask them for a solemn occasion to look at what was passed by the voters and ask them, ‘is that consistent with Maine’s constitution.”
The solemn occasion Thibodeau referred to basically means a situation out of the ordinary requiring a supreme court decision.
The attorney general will represent the state senate when the request is submitted to the state supreme court, possibly next week.
