Our Katahdin has purchased the site of the former Great Northern Paper Mill for $1. The sale comes with $1.4 million in tax liability and $164,353 in back real estate taxes.
Our Katahdin was founded in December 2014 and has been active in community and economic development.
The goal now is to work to transform the site to best suit the area's needs.
In a statement, Sean Dewitt, the President of Our Katahdin, said, “We know this purchase comes with enormous responsibility. We can’t promise instant results, but we can guarantee our best effort to help transform this idle industrial site into a productive, innovative bio- industrial park that leverages the comparative advantages of our region. This site is our heritage. We strongly believe in its future."
Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Congressman Bruce Poliquin are applauding the purchase, saying it will help to relieve the town of a large burden.
