KINGFIELD – The changing weather conditions are blamed for a five vehicle pile-up involving a school bus in Kingfield.
Authorities say it was around 7:20 a.m. Thursady morning when a light rain started falling on Route 142, creating an icy coating on the surface.
That’s when a Toyota driven by Judi Hawkes, 55, of Cumberland went out of control and crashed into a snowbank before slamming into a school bus carrying 8 students.
Moments later two other vehicles collided at the scene.
A fifth driver managed to avoid the wreckage in the roadway, but ended up colliding with a snowbank leaving it teetering in the air.
Some of the drivers were brought to the hospital to be checked out for various injuries.
None of the elementary school students on the bus were hurt and another bus was called to the scene to transport them to school.
