ROCKLAND – A Northport man accused of assaulting his 11-week child remains in jail.
Officials said a judge set bail for the man Wednesday, but he has yet to be released.
Two days before Christmas, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office received a call from somebody working in the Waldo County General Hospital emergency room stating that they had an eleven-week-old child there that had significant injuries.
Chief Deputy Jason Trundy said “Deputies checked out the report, then called in detective Gerry Lincoln.”
He spoke with the emergency room staff to try to ascertain what it was that they had what type of injuries they had, at that point in time. And, then obviously continued the investigation by talking with the parties involved.
“So, last Friday night, 19-year-old Neil Legasse was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and assault on a child.” added Chief Deputy Trundy.
Initially, the investigator was told there were broken bones that were noted by the emergency room staff. Detectives continue to investigate the allegations.
“It’s something we recognize anytime a child as young as eleven weeks is injured. That’s an emotional situation for everybody involved: family, medical staff, law enforcement, the community. And that’s part of the reason why we’re trying to do a thorough investigation and make sure we get all of our facts straight.” concluded Chief Deputy Trundy.
