AUGUSTA (WGME) – On I-295 crashes are almost a daily occurrence. Now two lawmakers want to lower the speed limit on a section of the highway.
The two democrats submitted bills to change the speed limit from 70 miles per hour to 60 miles per hour between Falmouth and Brunswick.
The speed limit was raised in 2014.
Representative Teresa Pierce said she often sees crashes during her commute to Augusta. She hopes the legislation will get the conversation about safety going.
She said “I think working with the transportation deptartment Is critical..understanding the needs of this road the people, but also the safety, there are kids on this road, our parents are on this road, we’re on this road lots of people are coming to and from north bound and south bound and I want to make sure we’re providing the safest environment we possibly can to get people to where they need to be.”
The bills are expected to be taken up in the new year.
