SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Not everyone has visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads this week.
In fact, some people are looking forward to a Christmas meal of Maine lobster.
Winter is considered a slow season for lobster sales. It would be a heck of lot slower without orders to ship lobsters out of state for Christmas. In fact, orders started coming in to some companies earlier this month.
Beal’s Lobster Pier, General Manager Emery Bamford “The on-orders started coming in. We have something we call, “Beal’s at Home,” where people can call, we have a website where people can order on. And those are starting to come alive now.”
For years, there’s a flight from Bangor International Airport that to Europe just before Christmas, loaded with lobsters.
“That’s something I’m trying to stick my nose into, so to speak.” added Bamford.
These Maine lobsters will travel from Southwest Harbor to the West Coast.
Bamford said “We cover the nation. I’ve seen them go to California, Colorado, Texas. And, it usually goes well. The order sizes are as diverse as the zip codes where they are shipped.” He added “I do know there’s been a single order that was like three of the fifty pound boxes.”
