BANGOR – A Maine Lobsterman was arrested today and charged with “seaman’s manslaughter.”
Christopher Hutchinson, 28, was the captain of a fishing boat that sank in November of 2014, killing two of his crew members.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hutchinson was negligent when he set out to haul traps in dangerous weather. Authorities said he had also been using controlled substances and alcohol which contributed to the loss of life.
Hutchinson said the crew had just finished hauling traps near Matinicus Island when strong winds and large waves caused his boat to capsize. Hutchinson swam free and survived, but Tom Hammond, 27, of Rockland and Tyler Sawyer, 15, of Saint George were lost.
Hutchinson faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
