STATEWIDE – Cyber Monday is the top projected shopping day of the year according to a survey conducted by IPSOS Public Affairs for Offers.com, surpassing Black Friday for the top spot.
“Not everybody wants to stay up all night to brave the cold and the crowds and wait for hours to maybe get a good deal on something,” says Nory Jones, Professor of Management Information Systems at the University of Maine Corbett School of Business.
She says with the uptick in online shopping, comes new trends including an increase in mobile buying.
“So many people their behaviors are shifting because it’s right there,” she says. “No matter where you are, you don’t have to go home, you don’t have to go to the office and your computer is right there.”
Millennials are most likely to shop on Cyber Monday given their likeliness to own a smart phone and their experience with technology.
“So for them it’s natural,” says Jones. “Shopping online just makes a lot of sense.”
But with a stronger online presence, comes larger cyber security issues.
“As excited as we are to do it, the cyber thieves are even more excited about online,” says Susan Faloon of the Maine Emergency Management Agency.
Officials say to always make sure you are buying from a safe and reliable site.
“When you look at that URL for the website, how you can tell that it’s secure is when you see that http,” says Faloon. “Make sure there is an ‘s’ on there and that way you know it is secure.”
So what you’re looking for is a “https://” instead of a simple “http://.”
She also says to avoid using debit cards if possible.
“You’re giving thieves direct access to your money, your banking account, your checking account and or your savings account.”
It’s clear that Americans are shifting to online shopping despite possibly security issues.
Jones thinks it is a good idea for local businesses in the community.
“People are so time starved, they don’t have time to physically go down to stores,” she says. “If our small businesses could have an online presence and e-commerce presence it would help them immensely.”
