ORONO – A group supporting people with intellectual disabilities in Orono got an early Christmas present.
Groundbreaking for an addition at “Independence Advocates of Maine” began Wednesday to improve the facility.
They received a direct loan from the USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Program for almost $5 million.
The improvements will completely renovate the inside and add two 3,000 square foot additions.
IA Executive Director Catherine Robertson said “It’s built and designed in a way that specifically meets the needs of the individuals that live here and also looking forward to the future and meeting the needs of an aging population, and that’s whats occurring in our society now.”
The facility currently houses 17 individuals.
The new space will allow all of them to have private bedrooms, more outlets for their equipment, and more storage space
