HAMPDEN- A scary scene just past the Coldbrook Road exit when a car flipped on its roof in the middle of the highway.
We are told the driver of that car was thrown from the vehicle.
It happened just after 6 o’clock tonight when a tractor trailer heading northbound attempted to turn around in the cross over.
An SUV also traveling northbound tried to swerve to avoid hitting the truck, going into the soft shoulder and losing control.
Maine State Police tell us the tractor trailer driver should never have been using the crossover lane.
“It’s illegal to use the crossover. I do expect charges but I don’t know what they are at this point. We have to complete our investigation and look at all the factors of what occurred,” said Lt. Sean Hashey with the Maine State Police.
Maine State Police, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, and Hampden Fire and Rescue all assisted on the scene.
The driver of the SUV was taken to the Eastern Maine Medical Center, but there is no word yet on his injuries. Traffic was shut down for more than two hours, but then reopened. Officials are working to reconstruct the scene to gain a better idea of what happened.
