BREWER- Governor Paul LePage has signed a new bill into Law. Third grade students at Brewer Community School convinced him and lawmakers to make the lobster as the official “state crustacean.”
Gov. LePage signed the bill, LD1609, into law Monday morning after months of work by the entire third grade class.
Third grade teacher, Cherrie MacInnes, came up with the idea after she realized the lobster was not an official Maine symbol.
“All of the third grade teachers taught their students about the process of making a law. ” MacInnes said its “part of their curriculum is learning about the state of Maine. You have to take these teachable moments and go with it.”
MacInnes said the goal is to teach students the process of a bill becoming law. All 104 students wrote letters to Maine lawmakers and then took a field trip to Augusta to lobby the bill.
