Major Kenneth G. Smith crashed in the Mill Pond near Searsport seventy years ago, and Sunday there was a service to honor him.
He was a 33-year-old World War II Veteran who deliberately crashed his P47 Aircraft into the Mill Stream outside the town of Searsport. In attendance of the memorial service were some of the witnesses of the crash. Although there were many accounts of that tragic day, there is one thing witnesses have in common, Major Smith deliberately sacrificed his life and stayed in his plane to save the town. The memorial service today allowed town council to present the town with a marker that will mark the spot Major Smith crashed.
