Bookmobile Hands Out Free Books Featured

Written by

BREWER - Two out of three children from low income families don't have access to books in their home.

The Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is looking to change that.

Every year they team up with Darling's Ice Cream for a Cause to create the Bookmobile. The truck makes stops in local communities, handing out free books and ice cream.

Children are able to select a book they're most interested in. The hope is to eliminate problems kids can have if they don't continue learning during the summer, with service coordinator Meredith Eaton explaining, "That can contribute to that summer slide that everyone's heard about losing some of that learning they've gained over the school year."

The Bookmobile will be visiting other communities throughout the summer, including Old Town, Alton, Bradley and Bangor.
