Summer Work Opportunity Serving in Washington County (Sun. 20 May, 2018 8:00 am - 9:00 am)

Are you at least 18 years old? Are you looking for an exciting summer job? Do you enjoy helping your neighbors and your community and being outdoors? Healthy Acadia is partnering with Goodwill VISTA to recruit for AmeriCorps Summer Associates to help with food rescue efforts in its Washington County Gleaning Program this summer.

AmeriCorps Summer Associates serve 8- to 10-week terms over the summer months for organizations working to support increased food distribution to families in need. Programs begin as early as May 20 or as late as July 2, 2018. Associates will receive a stipend of $2,052 for the 8-week program or $2,565 for the 10-week program. All 8- and 10-week Summer Associates also receive an education award of $1,230 that may be used towards furthering education, or receive a $250 cash payout upon successful completion of the term.

AmeriCorps Summer Associate applicants must be at least 18 years old and commit to full-time hours. This is a great way to add valuable work experience to your resume or to your college application.

Business planning workshop series starts April 20

Bangor, Maine -- University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering a free 4-session business planning workshop with an optional consultation session starting April 20 from 9 a.m.-12 noon at UMaine Extension, 307 Maine Ave., Bangor.  The remaining dates are May 21, 23, and June 1. Consultations will be scheduled June 25.

'Starting your business: Planning for success' begins the series with participants reviewing key questions to consider in business planning. Additional workshop topics are cybersecurity, pricing goods and services, and decision-making with market research. Scheduled presenters are Extension business and economics specialist and UMaine Economics Professor Jim McConnon, Extension Professor Louis Bassano, UMaine Business Reference Librarian Grace Yan Liu, and Bangor Savings Bank Chief Information Security Officer Russell Patton.

MDI Chef Cas Dowden’s Ancient Grains Cooking Class Scheduled for May 23

Ellsworth, Maine—We have all heard quite a bit about ancient grains in recent months in the media, as an healthy addition or alternative to traditional processed grains we use in our kitchens. On Wednesday, May 23, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, MDI Chef, Cas Dowden, will be offering a healthy food preparation demonstration using the ancient grains, quinoa, barley and cous cous.

Chef Dowden encourages all attendees to gather into the kitchen to actively take part in the preparation of the food. Each class ends with a food tasting session and discussion. This session’s discussion will focus on the importance of food safety during and after cancer treatment. This session is the third in new  ‘Cooking with Cas’ series offered by the Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center.
