Adults, ages 50 and older, are invited to a panel discussion on healthy aging and healthy bodies at the Jesup Memorial Library on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m. as part the Age By Design series cosponsored by the Jesup, Island Connections, the YWCA Mount Desert Island and the Mount Desert Island YMCA.
Panelists Cas Dowden, Susan Sassaman and Mark Schoon, Senior Director for Wellness & Aquatics at the YMCA, will discuss ways that people of all fitness abilities can keep their bodies moving. The panel will be moderated by Martha Searchfield. After the panel, there will be a free session of EnchanceFitness, which is an evidence-based wellness program developed for older adults. Dowden teaches a class called Strong YWomen at the YWCA. The class is designed to strengthen and increase muscle tone in women, improve bone health and reduce the risk of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. It is based on the StrongWomen program, which is a national evidence-based community exercise and nutrition program targeted to midlife and older women. Sassaman is the coordinator of Healthy Acadia’s Graceful Aging Program. She teaches a variety of free weekly exercise classes for older adults at any fitness level including: chair yoga, meditation, fitness for Parkinson’s, tai chi for health, yoga for cancer and yoga dance. Sassaman has been offering yoga and dance classes and workshops in Vermont and Maine for more than 20 years.Schoon teaches EnhanceFitness, an interactive hour-long class filled with a variety of exercises tailored to the individual needs of all the participants. EnchanceFitness is a program developed for older adults by experts in the field of physical therapy which focuses on: strength, flexibility, balance and cardio endurance.
