ORONO – The University of Maine announced on Monday that all guests attending home hockey and basketball events will have to require proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test within the previous 72 hours.
Children under the age of 12 are exempt from these requirements, which will take effect on Oct. 15.
The mandate also will be enforced at university events held at both the Cross Insurance Center, Cross Insurance Arena and Augusta Civic Center.
Patrons can show either their vaccination card, a copy of the card or a picture when entering the facility, and talking with UMaine Athletic Director Ken Ralph, who suggested showing up earlier than usual assuming it may take longer to enter the event.
“The way it affected us is really men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s ice hockey, so once we found out what the system had decided to do, we went about looking at how we can manage the throughput of fans into the building in the most efficient way possible,” Ralph said.
