BANGOR – High school cross country teams are gearing up for their post-season push, with regionals this coming weekend. Bangor senior Dan McCarthy still has a few weeks left running for the Rams, but he’s already chosen where he’ll continue his career at the collegiate level.
McCarthy has verbally committed to Georgetown University, where he’ll run cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for the Hoyas.
The Bangor senior was deciding between a number of schools, including Boston College, Middlebury, as well as the University of Virginia.
“I was nervous about committing somewhere, especially when I hadn’t finished my visits, cause it’s always like the fear of the unknown, the what-ifs, and then I started to realize that’s pretty much the best option there is academically, athletically,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy currently holds the fastest 5K time in the state for boys cross country, which he set back in September. Right now, his focus is still on finishing this season strong.
“Definitely a relief. I think once cross country ends and once I get into the winter and the spring it’ll settle in more, and then I’ll realize, wow this is a pretty awesome opportunity I have and I’m very lucky to have it.”
