ORONO – Junior Chris Ferguson says he intends to transfer from UMaine after graduation.
Ferguson confirmed his decision through a series of tweets Monday evening, after first sharing his decision with Pete Thamel at Yahoo Sports.
After redshirting his freshman season, Ferguson started every game he appeared in starting his sophomore season in 2017 through week six of the 2019 season, when he suffered a Lisfranc injury in his foot in Maine’s game against Richmond. He missed two games in the 2018 season with a shoulder injury, but returned to help lead the Black Bears to an FCS semifinal appearance and CAA regular season championship. Ferguson was ruled out for the remainder of the season with the foot injury, freshman Joe Fagnano started in his place for the final stretch of the 2019 season.
There has been no indication as to Ferguson’s destination as of Monday evening, but he will have one year of eligibility remaining.
In a phone interview Monday night, Ferguson said the program will come back stronger next season, and he will rooting for the team’s success. “These boys are going to come back next year, they’re going to light it up, coach Nick [Charlton]’s going to come back even better than he was this year and all the coaching staff and all the players, I’m excited to see what they do, it’s unfortunate I’m not going to be a part of it but I’m going to be ecstatic and joyful just as I would be if I was here,” said Ferguson.
