AUGUSTA – The MPA originally told spring sport coaches at its member school to treat the delay to the season as a “hands off” period in communicating with athletes.
In a meeting Friday, the MPA and its spring sports committees drafted a set of preliminary guidelines for coaches communicating with their athletes.
Dave Utterback, Brewer High school athletic director, and head of the MPA baseball committee, told us Saturday that MPA leadership believes there are opportunities using current technology that allow for coaches to recommend individualized training activities that still follow social distancing protocols.
Sport specific protocols are being discussed among individual committees and coaching liaisons. Those recommendations are due to the MPA by Wednesday, according to Utterback.
Spring sports at MPA member schools are schedule to begin preseason practices on April 27, that decision is subject to change.
