Trevor Bates pleads not guilty to felony assault charge

NEW YORK - Former UMaine football standout and current Detroit Lion Trevor Bates pleaded not guilty Friday to a felony assault charge.


Bates was arrested back in January after he refused to pay a cab fare. Police say when he was brought in for fingerprints he refused and punched an officer cutting him and giving him a concussion.

 

He could face up to seven years in prison if convicted. The Westbrook, Maine native had a storied career in Orono racking up 207 tackles and 19 sacks. He was selected by the Colts in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He saw the most playing time of his career this season with the Lions appearing in nine games with three tackles
