HAMPDEN - Hampden boys basketball is only three days away from tournament time and as the Broncos get set to make their Class A North title defense they'll have to do so without one of their top players.

ABC 7 and FOX 22 has been able to confirm the Bangor Daily News' initial report that Broncos guard Kory Winch has been dismissed from the team. BDN sports reporter Larry Mahoney reported that Winch was suspended from the team after posting a photo on social media that included an inappropriate hand gesture.

RSU 22 superintendent of schools Richard Lyons said the decision to dismiss Winch came from head coach Russ Bartlett with the support of athletic director Fred Lower.

"I support the decision in what I call a casual a way. It has not been brought to my decision to overwrite that, I'm aware of the decision. I support the decision philosophically,"

Lyons did add that the situation has been brought to his attention again and could be revisited in the next few days once school is back in session. Hampden Academy was closed today due to weather.
