BANGOR - UMaine running back Ramon Jefferson has been arrested and charged with domestic violence assault and criminal mischief. Both charges are Class D misdemeanors and are punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Bangor police say they responded to a domestic violence incident around 6 p.m. Wednesday night. Police say an investigation led to the arrest of Jefferson.

Police officials say he left Bangor before they were able to locate him and asked Old Town police to arrest him.

Police added that Jefferson made bail.

"The University of Maine is confirming news reports that UMaine student Ramon Jefferson was arrested," UMaine Senior Director of Public Relations and Operations Margaret Nagle said. "Jefferson is alleged to have violated the student code of conduct and student-athlete code of conduct.

UMaine’s student conduct office in the division of student life is conducting a thorough investigation and any interim disciplinary actions, such as suspension from the university, are being determined today. Jefferson will not participate in athletics activities pending the outcome of the investigation.

Umaine does not comment on student conduct proceedings," she added.

The redshirt freshman had a great first year in Orono rushing for over 1,000 yards and 8 touchdowns. Jefferson was the first Black Bear freshman to run for 1,000 yards. He was also a HERO Sports freshman all-america honorable mention.
