NEWPORT - As the football season gets longer, so do the shadows.

Week fifteen is upon us and Nokomis is playing Saturday for a chance to go to the Class C state championship.

A spot most people did not expect them to be in, except for themselves.

“They said it right after the season last year they wanted to be a championship team..this group does not feel its house money,” said head coach Jake Rogers.

The Warriors kept their season alive last Friday after a shutout of MCI in the pouring rain in Pittsfield thanks to their run game.

“They kept their heads up, they thought they’d come out in the end..towards the end of the fourth quarter you could really see it they didn’t have any answers,” said quarterback Andrew Haining.

“When we got that one score lead we just wanted to hang on to it..didn’t want to do something stupid with turnovers so we just tried eek out a couple of first downs and really became a game of field position,” said Rogers.

Nokomis didnt have much time to relish in that victory as a date with Hermon awaits them this weekend.

Hermon, a team known for their dual threat quarterback Garrett Trask beat Nokomis in week three.

“You [got to] contain the man..he's everywhere and when they need a big play he's the guy..he can run thirty yards back and he can take it back to the he's a weapon," said Rogers

With the weather looking better for the matchup Nokomis can open back up their play book and let their quarterback Andrew Haining go to work.

“I think we’re going to do whatever it takes to win..If that means we have to line up and run the ball 50 times a game I think that’s what we’ll do..I think its nice to have the weather in case we do need to throw,” said Haining

A quarterback on one side that can do it all himself and a quarterback on the other side with weapons at his disposal.

A QB showdown with a trip to Portland on the line.
