ORONO - Maine football's "Black Hole," defense has been swallowing up the opposition for years. That tradition has continued this season.

Maine enters its bye week as the No. 1 red zone defense in all of FCS football and the best rush defense in the land. The Black Bears are only allowing a minuscule half yard per carry and are only yielding 13.5 rush yards per game.

Players such as Kayon Whitaker, Sterling Sheffield, Charles Mitchell and Deshawn Stevens have been flying around early this season and are a big reason why Maine is sitting pretty as a ranked team.

"It's our pass rush that's really gotten it done these first two games obviously 12 sacks, six against an FBS opponent that's allowing us to play some different coverages the defense is definitely helping us out giving us a chance late in games," head coach Joe Harasymiak said.
