BREWER - Both Brewer softball (No. 1 seed) and baseball (No. 2 seed) came into the Class B North playoffs with plenty of hype, but both would be tested Thursday afternoon. They were, however, tests they would pass.

No. 10 John Bapst baseball gave a valiant fight after beating last year's regional champion Old Town, but left the tying run on base in the seventh to fall 2-1 to Brewer.

Libby Hewes continued her dominance in the circle for Brewer softball, but used a fifth inning highlighted by two home runs to help shut down No. 8 Gardiner 7-2.
