ORONO - Red Gendron has secured his first hockey recruit as the new head coach of the University of Maine men's team.

Winger Nolan Vesey, hailing from Austin Prep in Reading, Massachusetts, will become a Black Bear in 2014.

Vesey just completed his senior year at Austin Prep, winning Catholic League MVP honors. He is expected to play in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) this coming season, before coming to Orono next year.

Landing Vesey is a significant accomplishment for Gendron, as Vesey comes from a strong hockey family. His father Jim was a standout at Merrimack College before spending some years playing pro hockey. His older brother, also Jim Vesey, just completed his first year at Harvard, where he tied the record for goals scored by a freshman. The older Vesey brother was selected in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators.

Austin Preparatory's Athletic Director Patricia Gonzalez only spoke highly of Nolan to ABC-7 and FOX-22, saying that he is a highly skilled player, who she is sure will enjoy much success in his career.

Gendron says his past experience in recruiting helped make this happen so quickly. "I've been doing this for a long time," Gendron said. "I had to do some recruiting at Yale and at the University of Massachusetts, so personally I was aware of the player pool and we were able to land an excellent recruit."
