Longtime assistant coach Mark Arnold was named head football coach Tuesday afternoon, after spending nine years besides Shields. Arnold has 19 years of coaching experience under his belt in total, including time spent as a head coach in Michigan and Wisconsin prior to coming to Maine. Now he's set to take over a program vacated by a local legend.
"Mark and I have a friendship that goes beyond coaching," Arnold said. "It's been the best professional opportunity to coach alongside Mark."
Arnold takes over a program that will have some rebuilding to do after losing a plethora of seniors whom helped the Trojans earn back-to-back state title game appearances. He said Tuesday his familiarity with the program's needs though should help make the transition even smoother.
"I just really felt like i was in a position to know what those challenges were for us over the next few years, and was excited to face those and work together with the group that's been here," he said.
