ORONO – Another chapter of the historic coaching career of John Donato has come to a close.
Storied coach high school basketball coach John Donato resigned from the Orono girls basketball head coaching job on Friday, after four seasons at the helm.
He originally took the job in 2017, two months after retiring from the Lawrence girls basketball job, replacing Nick Winchester leaving for Hampden.
Donato got the Red Riots to the seven seed in the PVC Class B pod playoffs in the abbreviated 2021 season, falling in the first round to Hermon.
His storied coaching career stretches back more than 40 years with 5 other schools, winning multiple state championships at Houlton and Lawrence. Donato was inducted in to the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
Orono will be posting the job internally, as well as fielding applicants outside the Red Riots community.
