ORONO – Last Friday night Bangor indoor track and field triple jumper Alyssa Elliott had trouble falling asleep. That’s because she knew she had the chance to make history the following day.
She did just that. Elliott broke Karen Watkins’ 32 year UMaine field house triple jump record with a jump of 37 feet, 7 1/4 inches. The sophomore spends her week running, not jumping so she can preserve her knees.
Elliott has been competing in track and field since she was nine. For obvious reasons the record means the world to her, but it also has some added meaning.
“My mom went to high school with the woman that had the record before so my mom had been talking to her for the past year. It was really exciting because I was really nervous the night before and just all the nerves and the year leading up to it got me really excited,” Elliot said.
