BELFAST – Saturday morning the best of northern Maine high school cross country descended on Troy Howard Middle School to try and win individual and regional titles.
The day started with Class A runners led by Jillian Richardson for the girls and Lisandro Berry-Gaviria for the boys followed by Bangor’s Gabe Coffey.
The Class B races were next, with the girls race being closely contested.
Ellsworth’s Caitlin McPherson edged out Jaymie Sidaway from John Bapst, and McPherson says she prefers to come from behind.
“It really pushed me which is good..because I was able to be motivated for a faster time,” said McPherson.
Class C’s winners were Kamille Kohtala of Orono and Evan Merchant of Jonesport-Beals.
They’ll all compete next week against the southern Maine qualifiers for the state titles, but Class B boy’s winner Matyas Nachtiagall says its going to be an uphill climb.
“The southern region they are much faster..so I hope for fifth place maybe,” said Nachtiagall.
