ORONO – In their first home game since their week one win against New Hampshire, the Black Bears put on a show for their fans.
Kenny Doak’s career-long 52 yard field goal with seconds left on the clock won the game for Maine against Villanova.
“It’s a different situation going for a game winning kick..it’s for all the marbles..again I want to do this for my team they put a lot of hard work in so its awesome to see it work out,” said Doak after the game.
Much of the game was a defensive stalwart, with each team only scoring a touchdown apiece.
Doak, who had a previous field goal attempt in this game blocked, had no lack of confidence going into that kick, “I hit it in practice..same exact length actually..same exact situation everyone around me..I knew I could do it.”
After a late game defensive stop, Isaiah Robinson and the Maine offense got the ball back with 1:39 remaining.
“First thing I was trying to get the touchdown..if that didnt work then getting field position..I was thinking check down..get the ball out of bounds let the clock stop..just gotta move the ball, no negative yards..,” said Robinson.
Maine travels to Rhode Island next week for another CAA matchup.
