ORONO – Maine women’s basketball head coach Amy Vachon was impressed by the poise of the freshman guard Dor Saar this past year.
“She’s a gym rat,” Vachon said recently. “She’s always working hard.”
So that’s why it came as little surprise to see the success the America East Rookie of the Year is having playing overseas. In particular, Saar has starred for her Israel U20 team, helping take the squad to a sixth place finish in the U20 European Class B Women’s tournament in Romania. There, she averaged 11.3 points per game, and established herself as one of the strongest guards in the tournament. Vachon is a believer in Saar taking her game to a higher level, and praised her efforts.
“She’s one of the 12 best players in Israel in her age group,” she said. “And that’s really impressive. So for her to represent her country and play against really good competition this summer is great.”
Saar returns to a squad that is looking to repeat as America East champions, before it fell to Texas in the NCAA Tournament.
