Reports: Ex-Yankee Matsui set to retire
Former New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui is set to retire after a two-decade long career in the major leagues and with Japan's Yomiuri Giants, according to multiple reports.
Matsui, often referred to as "Godzilla,'' hit a career .282 with 175 home runs in 10 MLB seasons with the Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays.
In 34 games with Tampa Bay last season, the 38-year-old batted just .147 before being released. He had his best season in 2004 when he clubbed 31 homers and tallied 108 RBIs while batting .298.
Matsui signed a four-year, $52 million deal with the Yankees in 2003 and left the team after earning MVP honors in the 2009 World Series.
