Fabrice Reuperne scored with less than a minute remaining in stoppage time to lift Martinique to a 1-0 victory over Canada in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday at the Rose Bowl.

Martinique controlled most of the match, but grew frustrated at its inability to put the ball in the net. A scramble in front of the net ended the frustration.

The ball squirted out of the penalty area toward midfield, and Reuperne got a running start on his shot, which came in the 92nd minute.

The victory was a first for Martinique in Gold Cup competition over Canada. The teams tied in 1993, and Canada won when the teams last met in 2002.

Martinique was seen as an underdog in Group A, given its fourth-place finish in the recent CFU Caribbean Cup.
