ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's soccer team shut out Binghamton 2-0 on Thursday afternoon in the America East quarterfinals, played at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears, who got goals from Evé L'Abbe (Laval, Quebec) and Jordan Pellerin (Waterville, Maine) in the victory, improve to 9-5-4 on the season. Binghamton falls to 8-8-2.
Maine struck just 5:00 into the game when L'Abbe kicked a ball from 20-yards out that when over the head of Binghamton keeper Gaby Gold and found the back of the net. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for L'Abbe.
The Black Bears wasted little time extending their lead. Off a corner kick, Maggie Malone (Halifax, Nova Scotia) had an initial shot that was stopped, but Pellerin was able to direct the ball off the rebound into the back of the goal to give Maine a 2-0 lead at 12:50. For Pellerin, it was her fourth goal of the season.
Neither team scored the remainder of the first half or during the second half as the Black Bears earned the 2-0 win.
Maine finished the game with an 11-10 edge in shots. The Black Bears had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Lauren Swant (Oakville, Ontario) made two saves in 27:26 of action, before leaving the game. Swant earned the victory and improved to 9-5-3 on the season. Swant was replaced by rookie Claudia Dube-Trempe (Chambly, Quebec) who made three saves in 62:34. It was the sixth shutout of the season for the Black Bears. Gold made four saves for the Bearcats.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 3 when it travels to Stony Brook for the America East semifinals. Game time is set for 2 PM.
