ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine defensive lineman Michael Cole (North Brunswick, N.J.) has been named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards Football Championship Subdivision Defensive Line Award Watch List as announced by the organization on June 2.
"Congratulations to Michael Cole on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Heading into 2013, Cole has already produced some of the nation's top individual defensive performances."
Last season, Cole recorded seven sacks in just five games to go along with 20 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles. Cole's 7.0 sacks unofficially led the CAA, as he did not appear in enough games to officially qualify for the recognition. Heading into 2013, Cole stands just 6.5 sacks away from tying the all-time school-record of 27.5 sacks in a career.
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. The preliminary watch list highlights thirty-eight returning performers, vying for the top individual defensive end and defensive tackle awards in the Football Championship Subdivision. The full list of 2013 recipients, including the 2013 CFPA FCS Awards, will be announced on January 8, 2014
