ORONO - Because of dropping player numbers, Orono high school hockey would cease to exist after this past season. And the fear in Old Town was that same thing would happen to their school in the future as well. That's why the two rivals decided to join forces to create the Old Town-Orono Black Bears, a class B hockey team that will begin play next season.
"Big picture, this will allow area kids to continue to play hockey for the future," said Orono athletic director Mike Archer.
The move was approved by both schools school boards recently, and by the Maine Principal's Association today.
