Husson Women's Team Wins vs. Thomas

Bangor, ME – The Husson University women's basketball team defeated the Thomas College Terriers by a final score of 64-34 in their home opener and first North Atlantic Conference affair. With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-1 (1-0 NAC) on the young season, while the Terriers drop to 0-6 (0-1 NAC).

Leading the charge for the Eagles was Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, ME), tallying a game-high 12 points and 5 rebounds in limited action shooting 50% from the field on 5-10 shooting. Reigning NAC and MWBCA Rookie of the Week and Husson Female Athlete of the Week Chandler Guerette (Presque Isle, ME) followed up her 20 point game last time out with 11 points, connecting on 3 of her 5 long range attempts. Guerette also collected 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

Elizabeth Goodall and Emilee Reynolds, who tallied 11 and 10 points, respectfully, led the Terriers.

The Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start, missing their first few attempts, and made a wholesale substitution early with hope of adding a bit of a spark offensively. Thomas would go on to score the first 6 points of the game, until the Eagles finally made their first field-goal on a Chrissy Larrabee (Brooks, ME) lay-up. The Eagles tied the game at 11-11 on a McIntyre basket, and took the lead shortly after on a jumper by Samira Cruz (Orlando, FL). Guerrette closed out the half with a clutch three point field goal off a pass from Denae Johnson (Bangor, ME) with 5 seconds remaining to stretch the Eagles lead to a double digit margin and send them into the break leading 29-18.

The Eagles got a quick steal from Cruz, 1 of her 5 total steals, who passed it forward to McIntyre for an easy lay-up to open the half and make 31-18. From there on out, it was a barrage of three pointers and well-timed steals that led the Eagles to victory. The Eagles trapped the Thomas offense, causing them to throw ill-advised passes and take premature shots. At the final buzzer, Husson collected a total of 20 steals.

Head Coach Kissy Walker said of her team's dominant victory, "It was a slow start, but it was a much better second half. Despite our low shooting percentage, defensively we held them to 34 points and caused 34 turnovers. We also had 12 girls in double minutes and I was very happy about that."

Both teams face another upcoming conference game. The Husson Eagles take on Maine Maritime Academy Saturday December 7th at 3:00 PM as part of Husson Sports Hall of Fame Weekend 2013, while the Thomas Terriers will host Lyndon State on Friday December 6th at 7:30 PM.
